The Transpolar Drift, one of the Arctic's most powerful currents and a key disperser of pollutants, is likely to disappear due to climate change. If this occurs the Arctic Ocean will likely become a "stagnant, polluted soup." Along with the Beaufort Gyre, the Transpolar Drift keeps Arctic waters continuously mixed and helps keep pollution from lingering too long. Right now most pollutants, including petroleum residue, pesticide and nuclear fallout, are washed out into the north Atlantic by the Transpolar Drift... but those conditions could be a thing of the past way too soon.

So How long is it going to take to clean this one up - Will it be another Exxon Valdez where years go by before people affected are provided any relief from this stupid devastation? Check out the aricle from Surfrider about the latest spill in Queensland. If they can't prevent accidents on tankers, how are they going to prevent accidents on off-shore oil rigs?

The plan in this series is to provide information on surfboard fins and why changing things up occasionally is good for surfing development, even if you are ancient like me. By changing your fins, you'll find that your board will re-act differently to all sorts of conditions. You'll also find that you will be able to do certain things with one type of fin or fin position that maybe you weren't able to do before. It's all about taking your surfing to the next level and most of all having fun.

The information to follow will discuss different types of fins, why and when to use them and what the possible impact will be on your surfing. The following information comes from my own experience, knowledge and mostly from techinical information paraphrased from FCS Fins.

The first section will be on Fin Selection Guidelines

There's a lot of conversation, particularly from Surfrider and other environmental group about the use of single use plastic bags - there is no debating about what they do to the evironment, not just bags but plastic bottles. Today has been designated by Surfrider and other groups as Celebrate a day without a bag ( plastic in particular) Check out the article from Surfrider as well as the links for more information. I've done my part by buying re-usable bags from the supermarket. Join in.

Also plastic bottles are a huge issue -15,000,000 yea that's millions - plastic bottles are purchased in the US everyday, and only 25% are recycled. I stopped buying plastic bottles, and bought a filter for my faucet. The water tastes great, and I feel better about the fact that I'm not adding to those 15million bottles.

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION OPPOSES EFFORTS TO LIFT THE OFFSHORE OIL MORATORIUM

This week, there have been several calls for Congress to lift its long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling. In response to these announcements, the Surfrider Foundation has released a statement on its position against offshore oil drilling.

“Surfrider Foundation is opposed to any attempt to lift the federal moratorium on offshore oil drilling,” said Environmental Director Chad Nelsen.

“Our nation’s oceans, waves and beaches are vital recreational, economic and ecological treasures that will be polluted by an increase in offshore oil drilling.

Instead of advocating for transient and environmentally harmful ways to meet America’s oil needs, we should seek a comprehensive and environmentally sustainable energy plan that includes energy conservation.”

There's been a lot of press out there about off-shore drilling, its implications and long-term impact on our coastlines. The Surfrider Foundation is totally opposed to off-shore drilling. I agree with Surfrider, especially when I remember walking on the beaches in Rhode Island as a kid and getting black gunk on my feet and seeing dead birds and fish covered in coal black oil as thick as tar. I remember the beaches being closed for half the summer, which was just an inconvenience, but the effects on the marine life were devistating. I will reprint Surfrider's last article on their position on off-shore drilling.

I'd love to hear some other opinions - maybe if enough people voice an opposition, I can forward on to Surfrider to help with leglislation against off-shore drilling.
